A proposal by three East High students in the Rochester School District was among the winners.

Land at heart of debate

In May, New York state announced the completion of the largest land acquisition in more than 100 years, the Boreas Ponds tract, which was the final purchase from a 2012 agreement with the Nature Conservancy. Should the land be designated as "wild forest" or "wilderness?" The vocabulary might not seem like a big difference, but it's at the very heart of a debate. Innovation Trail (innovationtrai...

The problems with cities doing things like this is regulations, taxes, and red tape. It is a shame that people can't have shelter, but I also know that you can't help someone that don't want to help themselves. Affordable housing should be available.

Also our Braille writers were all gray in the 1980's on up. The machines they are showing are all blue for those who are not able to see at all.

When minimum wage is 8.00 an hour and rent for cheap apartment is 800.00 a month. That only leaves less than 500.00 ( before taxes) to buy food, pay utilities, transportation, non food grocery items. Pray you don’t end up in hospital. So yeah someone can be working full time and still be homeless. Unfortunately, raising minimum wage doesn’t help as that cause the cost of everything to go up.

Anyone remember Starter Homes? 900 or 1000 sf. 1 bath, 2 bedrooms. Those are completely missing in most places now. Young families take the cheap apartments instead and people who are even lower income have no place to go. Before the 1980s, large numbers of working single men lived in boarding houses. Those are mostly gone too but seem to be making a quiet comeback. It's a red flag on society when an adult who works 40 hours a week can't afford to have a stable living environment.

When you have worked two jobs your whole life and you had really good skills but no company would be willing to pay what you are worth so you have to work for slave wages and you can't afford an apartment you are deeply ashamed You think what did I do wrong And when you see people that are just handed billion-dollar companies and they run them into the ground because they don't know what they're doing and they have no skills and they just keep getting handed more things and more money you see how unfair and evil the world is No one who is working everyday should be homeless All I ever hear is how the workers have responsibilities to the company but I never hear how a company has responsibilities to its workers and I actually hear the opposite that the companies have absolutely no responsibilities to the workers whatsoever

Imagine if Elon musk and Jeff bezos instead of spending 2 trillion dollars each time to joyride in those space rockets if they were to build small self-contained towns in rural areas like this where they used the state office campus design where you had 20 high-rise buildings that each could house 400 people and had underground concourse tunnels that connected to a central building that had the dining hall and all of the other resources that were needed and that you had a private power plant that created steam and hot water and heat and air conditioning and that everything was included with the rent and because you're feeding the people you don't need to have a kitchen or not a full kitchen you just need a sink and maybe a little fridge, but the meals would all be included. Your electric would be included And you would have each building have an on-site psychiatrist and an on-site therapist and on-site maintenance and onsite manager and an on-site coordinator and social workers and state resource workers, and everybody would have a digital screen that doubled as a TV that got over the air and free-to-air television, and through that screen you could communicate with the different administration people so you could click on the screen and have an icon for facility and if you needed a lightbulb change you could click on maintenance and you could have a list of basic tasks like light bulb or switch not working and you could have a button to message the maintenance department and you could type out a message of what the problem was And each different person would have a different button so you could click on facility and you would have manager maintenance social worker coordinator therapist psychiatrist state dept of aging , food stamps, etc.. Imagine if just two pilot towns were built like this where 8000 or 10,000 apartment and get food and medical Care If I were a trillionaire I would build one of these places I would have an application process for everyone that wanted to apply And I would have each person evaluated to see what their needs were and I would have different buildings that had different levels of care So if I had somebody that was sixty years old and they were just poor and they had worked two jobs their whole life and they just didn't have anything and they were quiet and they didn't have any record they didn't have any drug abuse they weren't causing any trouble they just needed a place to live then they would go in the building for people that were over 55 that were just poor and needed a place to live and didn't need a whole lot of support And for the person that was say 30 years old and they had severe drug and alcohol abuse and severe mental illness and they needed a huge amount of support they would be in the building that had the most psychiatrist and therapist and maybe even where there were 1 therapist per 4 people So maybe in that building where 16 people had apartments and 4 therapists were on each floor Imagine all the services that we could provide We could have 24-hour walk-in support meetings for gamblers anonymous and alcoholics anonymous and NA and SA and OA and have different support groups where people could just walk in A lot of people need to be heard And in listening to the people you figure out what they need and you can see if there's intervention needed way before it becomes a crisis And yes there would be law enforcement that would be there and there would be security on-site 24 hours a day in each building, and there would be a separate building where the administration lived the managers lived the police lived, and if needed they would be able to respond and they would have interaction on a personal level everyday with the people in their building I wish a trillionaire would just try building one of these cities If all else failed and it was a complete disaster you would have a city with condos that you could sell You could repurpose some of the buildings to be shopping malls for the rich You could have restaurants, movie theaters But at least try I remember the housing first in New York City where a private group just started renting apartments for people and the mayor evicted those people private people rented apartments and landlords were renting to them and the city the government intervened and made those people homeless You know they're not trying to help you when they do things Like that

Only 15 grand to build one there should be incentives for people to be able to put one on their property if they want even if they only charge three hundred a month it's paid off and a slight profit after only half a year plus the satisfaction of helping your fellow human God knows you can't expect the Government to do it. Shelters or group homes are full of other traumatized people too some just want their peace and quiet not to sit around taking on or burdening others with more stress and problems. Some staff victim blame or treat people like children that have been independent most of their lives so certainly there is more dignity to their own space.
